Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade(DFAT) supported Malaita Provincial Youth Council (MPYC) with Grants. 

Auki, Malaita Province- Today Malaita Provincial Youth Council (MPYC) achieve another milestone in issuing sub-grants to youth groups across Malaita Province through DFAT. 

A total of fourteen (14) sub-grants were awarded youth groups around Malaita including Malaita Outer Islands (MOI) which include Lord Howe and Sikaiana. The grants awards are signed and issued after competition of a week-long advocacy and empowerment training in Auki, Malaita Province. 

The week-long training include visit to youth led business initiative, presentation from leaders of Malaita Provincial Government and Malaita indigenous entrepreneur. Each of the guest speaker encourage youth leaders to make bold decision and start pursuing activities to drive Malaita as a province that has vast opportunity to excel economically. What we need to understand is that youth is the future of Malaita and Solomon Island, thus we must continue to work hard at this stage, one of the speakers said. 

The 14 grants will go toward youth initiates identified by respective youth groups as priorities. The range of activities that will be supported include; Small Medium Entrepreneurs activities, cocoa rehabilitation, coconut rehabilitation, taro farming, poultry, melon farming, and advocacy activities focus on climate change, economic empowerment among youth and women, leadership and gender. 

Speaking on behave of the MPYC, Provincial Secretary of Malaita Province and Malaita Provincial Government Hon Member of Provincial Assembly for Ward 26 challenge the recipient to receive the grant with strong determination to implement the activities and show that youths have the potential of do something to support various communities and the province as a whole. Speaking on behave of the grantees or recipient, Abel Wanesuia of Besi Youth in Ward 7, in North Malaita, acknowledge DFAT through MPYC for having confidence, and see it fit to support the 14 youth groups across Malaita including MOI. Mr Abel urge the receipeint to be responsible and deliver the grant as require and ensure the activities sustain our yours to ensure the continue to engage and their lives are transform. 

Each youth group will receive a grant of ten thousand dollars to implement respective activities. The recipient of the grant are: Besi Youth in Ward 7, Ambu Youth in Ward 1, Lilisianain Ward 1, Malaita Youth Hub, Kakara Youth in Ward 4, a youth group in East Baelelea, Ngariwane in ward 27, Manawai youth group in ward 19, Aulutalau Youth association in ward 21, two youth groups in MOI, TabaaYouth Association in Ward 9, and Red Cross Volunteers in Auki. The grant will go towards youth activities for the next three month.
