The long-awaited reopening of the 42-kilometer stretch of South Road from Auki to Mao’a Bridge has brought a wave of relief and celebration to communities, farmers, and businesses in along the South Road of Malaita. After years of closure, the revitalized road is now a symbol of hope, progress, and economic potential for the region.

The SBD11 million project, funded by Australia under its Emergency Works partnership with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, was successfully executed by local firm Trades Transformation Company Ltd. The project employed 34 men and women, who worked diligently to restore this critical transportation link. Community-supplied gravel played a vital role in the construction, providing an additional financial boost to local villages along the route.

The reopened road promises to significantly reduce travel costs and improve access to Auki, enhancing the livelihoods of those who rely on safe and reliable transportation. Farmers can now transport their goods more efficiently, businesses can expand their reach, and families can reconnect with greater ease.

“When the road is good, life is good,” remarked one delighted resident, capturing the collective joy and optimism of the community.

This milestone is a testament to the strength of the #SIAusPartnership, which aims to promote infrastructure development, create jobs, and drive economic growth across Solomon Islands. The successful completion of the project exemplifies how strategic investments in local infrastructure can bring transformative change to communities.

With the South Road reopened, the people of Malaita are looking forward to a brighter future, one paved with opportunities and progress.
