Lilisiana Community Takes Action to Protect Sacred Graveyard from Rising Tides

Lilisiana community has taken vital initiative to build a sea wall to safeguard their sacred graveyard. The community aims to prevent further erosion and protect the graves of their ancestors, which hold significant cultural and historical value.

Frank Taeburi, a youth advocator from Lilisiana, expressed the urgency of the situation, stating, โOur sacred graves are being swallowed by the rising seaโthe first row is already gone, with approximately ten graves lost, and now the second row is under threat.
He adds ,these graves hold our history, our love, and our connection to those who came before us. Weโre committing to doing everything we can to protect whatโs left, to save this piece of who we are.โ

Taeburi said โover the weekend, community members rallied together, utilizing the resources at their disposal to kick-start the protective efforts. Taeburi highlighted the challenges faced by volunteers, noting, โCutting down old coconut trees to use their trunks for retention isnโt an easy task. Our men even had to float and swim with the trunks from afar to bring them to the site.โ The community's determination is evident as they prioritize managing the relentless waves and tides, which are particularly harsh during this season.

As part of their organized approach, the Lilisiana community has established a working village committee to lead and coordinate the sea wall construction efforts. โOur vision is to construct a sea wall, but we are aware this will take time,โ Taeburi said, stressing the importance of sustained commitment and collaboration.
Taeburi also called on their Member of Parliament and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to lend their support to this important initiative. โNow more than ever, we need help from those who care about preserving our heritage and safeguarding our communityโs future,โ he urged.
