Afio, the main administrative center of Small Malaita, is preparing for important changes as two significant infrastructure projects move closer to construction. Engineers and land officers from the Malaita Provincial Government are currently in Afio, last week and are completing final surveys for these projects, which will be funded by the World Bank through the Provincial Governance Strengthening Program (PGSP).

The projects include a seawall for Afio, costing SBD 1.9 million, and a market house, with a budget of SBD 1.5 million. These developments aim to protect Afio from coastal erosion and provide better facilities for local vendors and traders.

A key achievement occurred last week when landowners and important local groups, including the Ward Development Committee (WDC), signed consent forms. This allows work to begin as soon as contractors and funding are confirmed, marking a crucial step toward starting construction without delays.

With these projects, Afio is set to become a safer and more economically active center for Small Malaita. The completion of these initiatives will benefit local businesses and communities, while also improving the region’s infrastructure for future growth.
