Elderly Man From Odou Village Rescued After Drifting at Sea for 2 Days

An elderly man from Odou Village near Ata’a in East Fataleka, Malaita Province, was rescued after drifting at sea on Sunday afternoon. The man, known as Mr. Raphael, struggled against strong winds while fishing in the open waters. Due to the rough seas he ended up behind Leli Island, where he was found by other fishermen.

Fishermen from nearby Kwai and Ngongosila Islands spotted Mr. Raphael yesterday afternoon( Tuesday) and quickly came to his aid.

They reported that he was in good health when they discovered him, which was a relief for everyone involved. He was then safely taken to Atori Police Station and later taken back to his home village.

This incident highlights the importance of safety for fishermen and those who wish to travel by sea, especially during this time of bad weather caused by cyclones in which many areas in the country are experiencing strong winds and rough seas.

This week authorities are urging sea travellers to take necessary precautions before heading out to sea. It is paramount to check weather conditions and listening to your radio to stay informed and cautious for weather updates.
