The Fauabu Rural Health Clinic marked a handing over ceremony yesterday as the community gathered for the official handing over of a new rainwater catchment system, donated by SurfAid and presented by the organization’s Country Director, Mrs. Rebecca Sade.

In her remarks, Mrs. Sade described the occasion as a shared commitment to improving health services in the region. “This project is a milestone for us all,” she said. “Access to clean drinking water is essential in preventing many diseases and improving overall health outcomes.”

The rainwater catchment system is expected to significantly enhance the clinic’s ability to provide safe and hygienic care, especially in such a place where access to clean water has been a long-standing challenge.

Responding to the gesture, Bishop Michael Bebeu, Chairman of the Fauabu Board, expressed his deep gratitude to SurfAid, calling the donation a sign of divine care. “This project is a visible testimony that God is truly with us,” Bishop Bebeu said. “Through the generosity of SurfAid, God’s care has reached the sick, the weak, the healers, and everyone who comes through the gates of Fauabu.”

Guest of honour Dr. David Danitofea, Director of Malaita Provincial Health, emphasized the need for proper maintenance of the system. “This is an important and costly asset. We must take ownership and look after it,” he said. “With our limited resources, we all must take responsibility for our own health.”

The ceremony was attended by several key figures from the province, including Chief Health Inspector Gloria Siwainao, ACOM representative Mr. Peter Pitia, diocesan staff of Malaita, and members of the surrounding communities.

The Diocese of Malaita gave special recognition to Rev. Nickson Atu, who coordinated the project on the ground. Despite facing several challenges over the past six months, his leadership ensured that the system was completed on time and according to plan. The project was officially launched on April 29, 2025.
