The Ministry of Infrastructure and Development (MID) has announced that Fiu Bridge is now reopened for public use, effective from last night, bringing much-needed relief to commuters in the Northern and Eastern regions of Malaita Province.
However, authorities caution that emergency repair work is still ongoing, particularly tonight, as critical components required for the bridge's restoration arrived this morning from Honiara.
š Vehicle Loading Advisory Issued
As a safety measure, drivers are strongly advised to limit their vehicle loads while traveling across the bridge until all repairs are fully completed. Meanwhile, heavy-duty vehicles are encouraged to continue using the wet crossing as a detour route.
MID has issued an apology for the four-day closure that disrupted local travel and logistics, acknowledging the inconvenience caused to residents and travelers.

The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), contracted for the emergency works, also extended their apologies for disruptions linked to heavy construction activity.
MID expressed its gratitude to the Malaita Provincial Government and surrounding Fiu communities for their cooperation and support during this urgent intervention.
Looking ahead, officials reiterated that constructing a new, more durable bridge remains a top infrastructure priority for the region.
"We thank the public for their patience and understanding during this period," a ministry spokesperson said.
