Malaita Provincial Government to Focus on Projects Instead of Public Events

The Malaita Provincial Government has announced that it will not be organising any public events this year, including celebrations for Independence Day and the province’sll second appointed day. Instead, the focus will be on completing key development projects already underway.
Premier Elijah Asilaua made this announcement during an interview with the Island Sun in Auki on Tuesday, July 8.
He explained that the government’s attention is currently on important projects such as the tar-sealing of Auki town roads and the expansion of Kilu’ufi Hospital.
“These projects are progressing well. We are focusing on the Auki town tar-sealing, the expansion of Kilu’ufi hospital, road upgrading, and others,” Premier Asilaua said.
He stated that public gatherings will only be held after these major projects are completed. As a result, no event was held in the province to mark the national Independence Day yesterday.
Looking ahead, Asilaua said that even for the province’s second appointed day, celebrations will not be held at the provincial level but will take place at the ward level instead.
He also encouraged Malaitans to work together with the government to achieve the province’s goals.
“I want to encourage my people and stakeholders that we must cooperate with others and we will achieve what we want,” he said. “We must work together with people, stakeholders, churches, other provincial governments and the government before we can achieve our goals.”
The Premier’s message highlights a new direction for the province — prioritising development over public celebrations.
