The independent Leader, Member of Parliament for East Are Are Constituency,  Hon Peter Kenilorea, took to the media, to highlight the differences between compromises done on policy lines in comparison to compromises done based on satisfying personal gratification.

Kenilorea asserted that compromises based on enduring values and national interests are far more honorable than those that cater solely to constituency interests or personal gratification. His remarks come in the wake of a notable political shift, as Honourable Colodio Teifi, a member of the Solomon Islands United Party and MP for West Kwaio, recently defected to the government coalition led by the Our Party for National Unity and Transformation GNUT

According to sources revealed to Malaita Issues, Bina Harbour Project is a GNUT Flagship Policy. Hence, Cabinet is establishing a Bina Harbour Project Sub Committee dedicated to oversee the implementation of that project moving forward. Hon. Clodio was offered the Chairmanship of the project, hence he has to resign from UP to be a back bencher of GNUT to qualify him to the Chairmanship to sub committee. It is not a easy decision to make considering his loyalty to SIUP. He decided that regardless of whatever politics there is, his heart is on Bina Harbour Project. He has been very focal on Bina Harbour Project since he came into Parliament, and he thinks it's about time go for that opportunity since it is now offered for an opportunity to directly involved in the project implementation. Moreover, the Bina Harbour Project is hosted on his land, in his provincial ward, and in his Constituency. Let alone Malaita or Solomon Islands at large.

Therefore, it will be irresponsible of him to dodge the opportunity for political stubbornness.

In his statement, Kenilorea urged fellow Members of Parliament, both Independent and Opposition, to prioritize their duty to address national issues over compromising their values for the sake of local interests. He called on leaders to uphold the principles that have been passed down through generations, highlighting the importance of integrity in political leadership.

On his personal social media page, Kenilorea shared his thoughts on the challenges of maintaining one’s principles in the political arena. "From my limited experience, it is truly a challenge to hold on to one’s values or principles in politics. They are usually the first casualties, often sacrificed on the altar of compromise," he said.

He further distinguished between policy-related compromises, which he deemed a common aspect of political life, and personal compromises, which he argued undermine the very purpose of political leadership. "Intention is key, but it must be rooted in values and principles greater than our fallible human nature. Good intentions alone are not sufficient, as they can easily lead to corruption. The saying goes, 'the road to ruin is paved with good intentions,'" he noted.

Kenilorea expressed that serving as a national leader is a privilege and a heavy responsibility. He emphasized that the pursuit of national prosperity should take precedence over local interests, reminding leaders that they are ultimately responsible for tackling national issues.

"As a nation, let us focus more on national matters. Let us not compromise but instead hold steadfast to the values and principles handed down to us by the One who is the same yesterday, today, and forever," he concluded.
