Premier Asilaua; Malaita Lacks Mining Ordinance

MALAITA Province government has no ordinance to regulate mining operations despite one company is currently doing prospecting in Fataleka.

Malaita’s Premier, Elijah Asilaua said mining remains a potential area for future investment.

He said according to the records, only one company has paid business license to do prospecting in Fataleka, East Malaita.

However, Premier Asilaua said the Mines and Minerals Act 1990 (Chapter 42) currently serves as the primary legislation governing procedures for granting licenses, permits, leases, and the establishment of the Mineral Board.

He said provincial executive is supportive of consulting with the Ministry of Mines, Energy, and Rural Electrification to recruit a dedicated officer.

“This officer will be stationed in Auki to coordinate investigative studies, research, and development initiatives, working in collaboration with national and provincial governments on legislative frameworks and investment opportunities within the mining industry,” he explained.
