Reconciliation Ceremony Between East and West Kwaio Officially Opens in Buma Malaita Province
A reconciliation ceremony between the East and West Kwaio tribes officially opened yesterday at the Buma Catholic Mission Station in Malaita Province. The event, which runs from April 3rd to 6th, brings together tribal groups from across Malaita, with 14 tribes participating, as part of an ongoing effort by the OFI Tribe to heal past divisions and promote unity among its people.
Daniella Geli, representing the OFI Reconciliation Committee, welcomed the tribes to the event, thanking them for their attendance and for taking part in this historic occasion. She also expressed her appreciation to the Premier of Malaita Province and the Member of Parliament for West Kwaio for attending the ceremony.
Hon. John Daubo, Member of the Assembly for Ward 28, shared his honor in witnessing the event, calling it the "seed" planted by God in the hearts of leaders who initiated this important ceremony. "In the past, we have had differences, but today we come together to reconcile and move forward for the development of our land," Daubo said.
Malaita’s Premier, Hon. Elijah Asilaua, emphasized the importance of unity in his speech. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the leaders who worked tirelessly to make the event possible. "Without their dedication, we may not have reached this point. My government values peace and reconciliation, as it is the only way forward for Malaita to open doors for development," Asilaua said.
Hon. Colodio Teifi, Member of Parliament for West Kwaio, who was the guest of honor, acknowledged the historic nature of the event and the wisdom of the tribal leaders and chiefs who have advocated for reconciliation. "You are a vital link between our past and our future," he stated. "The process of reconciliation is not a single event; it requires continuous effort, understanding, and trust."
Teifi concluded his remarks by urging everyone to embrace the spirit of reconciliation. "Let us commit ourselves to building connections and fostering understanding that will resonate through generations. May the spirit of reconciliation guide us as we move forward together in peace and unity."
This ceremony marks a critical step in healing the divisions for the people of Kwaio, as the tribes of Malaita work together for a peaceful and prosperous future.
