Red Cross Malaita Branch Responds to House Fire in Fiolo Village

The Red Cross Malaita Branch has come to the aid of a family in Fiolo Village, West Kwaio (Ward 26), following a devastating house fire that occurred on May 6, 2025.

Branch Coordinator of the Red Cross Malaita Branch in a statement from their facebook page says, "the fire completely destroyed the home of Mr. Pio Mato'omae while he was away working at his coconut plantation"

Reports reaching us says, the blaze was sparked by a mobile phone battery that was being charged directly from a solar power source. Tragically, Mr. Mato'omae lost all his belongings in the fire. she added.

Upon learning of the incident, Mr. Elvis Godwin, Ward Supporting Officer for Ward 26, visited the Red Cross Malaita Branch to request emergency assistance on behalf of Mr. Mato'omae and his family.

In response, the Red Cross promptly provided essential Non-Food Items (NFIs) to support the family’s immediate needs. The items included a tarpaulin, shelter kit, blankets, bucket, collapsible water container, hygiene kit, kitchen set, and mosquito net.

The handover of the relief items took place today, with Mr. Elvis receiving the supplies from Ms. Elizabeth Oge, Branch Coordinator of the Red Cross Malaita Branch.

Mr. Godwin expressed his appreciation to the Malaita Red Cross for their swift response and support, describing it as a timely intervention during a period of great hardship for the affected family.
