United Kingdom High Commissioner to Solomon Islands Paul Turner is currently in  Auki Malaita Province this week. This morning the High Commissioner made a courtesy visit to Premier of Malaita Province Hon Elijah Asilaua.

According to UK facebook official page he said "I had an excellent meeting with Malaita Premier Hon. Elijah Asilaua this morning. We talked about the challenges and opportunities of the provincial government and hopes for the future, including jobs for many young people. Greater devolution is crucial."

Through a multilateral approach, the UK Government is supporting various infrastructure developments in Malaita Province including road upgrades in Malaita Province that address the deteriorating condition of East Road from Dala, which serves as a vital link for communities in East Malaita. The works have involved routine maintenance and regravelling, along with culvert/drainage and concrete reinforcement in steep sections to improve durability and resilience against heavy rains.

The works completed include the installation of 1,100 m of concrete pavement with drains, drainage and waterway maintenance, grading and re-gravelling, patching and filling of carriageways, and the reinstatement of slopes. The remaining works include the installation of roadside furniture, reinforcing concrete drains and other upgrades.

The United Kingdom is supporting road development in Malaita through its contributions to the World Bank Pacific IDA - World Bank Group fund, which is undertaking this development in partnership with the Government of Solomon Islands under the Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP).
