YECA Project Empowers Rural Youth Through Business Training in Oibola
A five-day youth empowerment training under the Youth Economic and Climate Action (YECA) initiative concluded successfully yesterday in the Oibola community, bringing together 35 enthusiastic young participants from Adakwa (East Malaita), Namosalabe (Central Kwara'ae), and Oibola (Langalanga).
The training, which focused on Business Ideation and Business Process Development, was facilitated by Medodias Iapara from the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children, and Family Affairs (MWYCFA) office in Honiara.
In his remarks during the official closing ceremony, Mr. Iapara expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to engage with young people in rural communities.
“It is with real pleasure to be here with you for these past days in the heart of our rural communities where the true spirit of resilience and innovation thrives,” he said.
“As a representative of the MWYCFA, I am honoured to have facilitated this training, which reflects our ongoing commitment to equipping young people with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to become agents of change in their own lives.”
Mr. Iapara also acknowledged the unique challenges rural youth face but highlighted their deep connection to the land, economy, and social fabric of their communities.
YECA Project Coordinator Richard Olita thanked the participants for their dedication and effort rendered towards the event and for the host community for their hospitality.
“I am so grateful for all three community youth groups for the time and effort they put into this training—and especially to the Oibola youth for hosting the event,” Olita said.
The YECA project is funded by Plan International Ireland with support from the European Commission. It is implemented in the Solomon Islands by Plan International Pacific Solomon Islands in partnership with the Solomon Islands National Youth Congress (SINYIC).
The program is focus is to strengthen the capacity of young people to respond to climate change and economic challenges through sustainable solutions and skill-building opportunities.
